Historical Fiction Choice Board
For the Historical Fiction Literature Study, the students will read individual novels set in an historical period. Students will be selecting tasks from the choice board (see link above) to reflect upon their reading and enhance their understanding of the historical context. Students will be expected to complete at least five of the activities and will be given class time to read and work on the activities. Students will complete an in-class written assessment of their novels beginning January 27.

We are a community of readers!
We will be reading A LOT this year! To support our reading goals, we will be reading in class, and students will be expected to read at least a couple of chapters every night as well. (Including weekends). I also encourage students to read aloud to someone at least once a week. Students can read to a parent, sibling, friend, or even a pet! Students will not be recording their nightly reading on a traditional reading log. Instead, students will be reflecting on their reading via discussions and written responses in class. Throughout the year, we will be learning the strategies good readers use to improve our reading skills.
Lexiles
We will be using Lexile scores to monitor students' reading growth. The optimal reading range for students to improve their reading comprehension is generally from 100 points below their Lexile score up to 50 points above their score. For more information about Lexiles, please visit www.lexile.com.
